Boeing is partnering with NASA and United Airlines, supported by FAA, GE Aerospace, German Aerospace Center (DLR), and World Energy, with the objective of reinforcing sustainable aviation by testing in-flight to measure how sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) works on the exhaust trail and non-carbon emission while impacting the life cycle of the fuel on the climate.
The commercial jets, Boeing’s ecoDemonstrator Explorer and 737-10 by United Airlines, will fly with 100% SAF and conventional jet fuel in separate tanks and alternate fuels during the testing. In contrast, NASA’s DC-8 Airborne Science Lab quantifies emissions released by the fuels and emits ice particles in a vapor trail. World Energy is responsible for providing SAF for the tests from the facility at Paramount, California.
