Lufthansa secures jobs with ‘short-time working hours’

1 April 2020: With an aim of securing jobs in the current COVID-19 pandemic, Lufthansa has introduced short-time working for cabin and ground staff in Frankfurt and Munich. Accordingly, Lufthansa has signed agreements with its work council and trade unions. This is applicable to the management as well.

This began in March 2020, and depending on the loss of work, the extent of reduced working hours can go up to 100 per cent. This agreement is applicable to almost 27,000 employees of Deutsche Lufthansa AG.

"With short-time working, we want to secure jobs of our employees in these difficult and unusual times. Our goal remains trying to avoid redundancies. The agreement of short-time work is an essential prerequisite for this. We will have to constantly review the economic parameters," said Michael Niggemann, Chief Officer, Corporate Human Resources and Legal Affairs at Deutsche Lufthansa AG.

The Lufthansa Supervisory Board, Executive Board and Management will also participate in these measures in solidarity with all the employee groups. They have also decided to waive off some part of their basic monthly compensation. This voluntary waiver will be applicable for a period of six months starting from April 2020.
