Airbus orders overheat detection systems from Saab:
12 February, 2019: Saab has secured an order for the provision of overheat detection systems (OHDS) to be installed on the Airbus jetliner A350.
The OHDS detects bleed air leakage in an aircraft. It is based on a new technology which has been developed by Saab and it makes use of fibre optical sensors throughout the bleed air ducts and an optical interrogator which will generate and read the optical signals, leading to a system with a drastically reduced number of components.
A special type of electrical wiring filled with eutectic salt was used in the traditional method to detect overheating due to bleed air leakage in an aircraft which was very complex. The new system is easy to install when compared to the old one. It is also lightweight and is highly reliable. It will also open up future additional measurement functions.
