Portuguese Air Force chooses Collins Aerospace for C-130H Hercules aircraft modernisation effort
28 February, 2019: Collins Aerospace, subsidiary of United Technologies has been chosen by the Portuguese Air Force to modernise its C-130H Hercules military transport aircraft.

As the company is serving as a contractor to OGMA – Industria Aeronautica de Portugal, it will provide its Flight2 aftermarket avionics solution, which is the most cost-effective and lowest-risk CNS/ATM upgrade solution.

The Portuguese Air Force’s C-130H will be in compliance with the most recent International Civil Aviation Organisation standards by upgrading to Flight2. They will also be equipped with a tactical advantage in military operations because of the upgrade.

The Flight2 upgradation will turn a federated analogue system into a modern digital glass cockpit that will provide commonality to commercial aircraft.

Collins will leverage its Flight2 Mobility Mission Application (MMA) architecture, as part of the upgrade which will enable the customers to choose from a superset of off-the-shelf capabilities. Customers can make use of the MMA architecture to tailor the system according to their mission requirements; comply with regional communications navigation surveillance/air traffic management mandates, or simply to get the most out of the capabilities for a given budget.

“The Portuguese Air Force uses C-130s for a broad range of missions, including personnel and cargo transport, and even firefighting,” said Dave Schreck, vice president, Military Avionics & Helicopters for Collins Aerospace. “Modernising to the Flight2 system provides their Air Force with the latest generation of avionics aimed at optimising their operations while making the most of their budget and minimising aircraft downtime.”
