Rajnath Singh appointed as the new Defence Minister of India:
1 June 2019: Rajnath Singh has been selected by the Narendra Modi led government to be the Defence Minister of India. Previously, he also served as the Home Minister of India. He was the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and served as a Cabinet Minister in the Vajpayee Government.
Rajanth immediately held a meeting with the Air Force chief Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa, Army chief General Bipin Rawat, and newly appointed Navy chief Karambir Singh after taking charge as the Defence Minister. Also present in the meeting were the Defence Secretary and several other senior officials.
As the Defence Ministry, Rajnath's most important challenge would be to speed up the long-delayed modernisation of the armed forces.
Earlier the position of the Defence Minister of India was held by Nirmala Sitharaman.
